Tips to Treat Basement Mold After Water Intrusion

by:Boom Home     2020-05-22
Mold thrives in areas that have undergone water intrusion. When mold grows in a basement, it is imperative to treat it aggressively for two reasons. First, it can cause damage to the walls and floors, as well as damage other items in the basement such as furniture and appliances. Second, mold can be a health hazard. Keep in mind these basic steps and precautions when treating mold in a basement. Instructions 1. Find the reason the mold has formed. Check for things such as a leaking pipe or water seeping in through the walls or floor. Remove any water immediately. Use dehumidifiers or fans to help dry the area. Stop the source of the water. It does no good to treat the mold if it will quickly form again. If mold is forming because of high humidity, figure out a way to better ventilate the area and keep it dry. 2. Wet the area to be treated with a sponge or rag. Wipe off as much mold as possible. 3. Use a spatula to scrape off any visible, remaining mold. Use a non-metallic spatula if you are worried about scratching a surface, such as a finished wood wall. 4. Mix a solution of water, chlorine beach and laundry detergent. Mix 1 cup of bleach and 1/2 cup of detergent for each 1 gallon of water when treating mold on concrete. For wooden walls, mix a solution of 1 gallon of water with 1/2 cup of laundry detergent and 1/2 cup of bleach. Test the solution on a small part of the wall. If the wood changes color, use a solution of water and detergent only. A wood-cleaning product can also be used on a wooden wall. 5. Thoroughly scrub an area (or item) that has mold. Scrub with a sponge or rag for wooden walls. Use a sponge, rag or bristled brush for concrete. Scrub as hard as possible to help remove mold from its roots. Air Conditioning Repair McComb MS 6. Tips & Warnings Keep moldy areas as clean as possible. Attack mold in its early stages. When cleaning mold, wear rubber gloves, old clothes, eye goggles and a surgical mask. Be careful when using a chlorine beach solution on wooden walls and make sure it has no effect on its color. Block off basement to keep airborne mold spores from floating upstairs while scrubbing.
